Whirlpool Dryer Blower Wheel: When and How to Replace

If your Whirlpool dryer is making loud rumbling noises or taking longer than usual to dry clothes, the problem might be a faulty blower wheel.

The blower wheel is essential in pushing air through the dryer drum and vent system. Over time, it can wear out or get clogged with lint, which may lead to excessive noise or reduced efficiency.

Before replacing the blower wheel, inspect and clean any lint buildup that could be causing the issue. If the wheel is damaged or your dryer’s performance hasn’t improved after cleaning, a replacement is likely necessary.

Common Signs Your Blower Wheel Needs Replacement

If you’re not sure whether the blower wheel is the problem, look out for these signs:

  1. Unusual Noises: Loud rumbling, rattling, or squealing sounds during operation.
  2. Reduced Airflow: Minimal air coming out of the vent despite the dryer running.
  3. Longer Drying Times: Clothes take significantly longer to dry, even in high settings.
  4. Burning Smell: A burning or overheating smell can indicate restricted airflow.
  5. Excessive Lint Accumulation: Large amounts of lint collect around the drum or vent.
  6. Uneven Drying: Clothes come out damp in some areas and dry in others.
  7. Visible Damage: Cracks, warping, or debris stuck in the blower wheel when inspected.

Tools and Supplies Needed

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • 1/4-inch nut driver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Socket wrench with 1/2-inch extension
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Replacement blower wheel (Whirlpool part WP697772) – Verify compatibility with your specific dryer model.

Prioritize Safety

Always follow these safety precautions when working on your dryer:

  1. Power Down the Appliance: Unplug the dryer or switch off its circuit breaker before beginning any work. This eliminates the risk of electric shock.
  2. Let the Dryer Cool: If it has been recently used, allow sufficient time for it to cool down.
  3. Work in a Safe Environment: Use a well-lit, uncluttered space, and keep children and pets away.
  4. Read the Manual: Check your appliance manual for specific instructions related to the replacement.
  5. Handle Parts with Care: Avoid using excessive force, which can damage the dryer or cause injury.
  6. Wear Proper Gear: Insulated gloves protect against sharp edges, and safety glasses or a dust mask can help if you’re dealing with debris or lint.
  7. Avoid Exposed Wires: Use non-conductive tools or insulated gloves when working around wires.

  6. Discard the old blower wheel.

Install the New Blower Wheel

  1. Thread the new blower wheel clockwise onto the motor shaft by hand until it is tight.
  2. Wedge the adjustable wrench against the blower housing to hold the shaft steady.
  3. Use the socket wrench to tighten the new blower wheel onto the shaft.
  4. Replace the blower wheel cover by inserting the tab into the slot and securing it with the screw using a 1/4-inch nut driver.

Reassemble the Dryer

  1. Position the drum on the support rollers and slide it back into the cabinet.
  2. Loop the belt around the idler pulley and motor drive pulley.
  3. Turn the drum manually to check the belt tension.
