Water Inlet Valve Replacement for Whirlpool, KitchenAid & Maytag Fridges

A refrigerator that stops dispensing water or producing ice often has a faulty water inlet valve. This repair is simple enough for most people to do at home and usually takes less than 30 minutes. With a few basic tools, you can restore normal water flow and ice production.

What the Water Inlet Valve Does

The water inlet valve controls the flow of water to both the ice maker and the dispenser in Whirlpool, KitchenAid, and Maytag refrigerators. Over time, the valve can wear out, become clogged, or crack, which prevents water from reaching the ice maker and dispenser.

Replacing it involves removing the old part and installing a new one. The process is quick and requires only a small set of tools.

How to Identify a Failing Water Inlet Valve

Before replacing the valve, it helps to confirm that it is the source of the problem. Look for these common signs:

  • Water dispenser produces little or no water, even with good pressure at the source
  • Ice maker stops producing ice or produces small, misshapen cubes
  • Audible clicking or humming sound when trying to dispense wate,r but no flow occurs
  • Visible cracks or corrosion on the valve body
  • Water leaks near the valve location at the back of the refrigerator
  • Testing with a multimeter shows no continuity through the valve’s solenoid coils

Tools and Materials You Will Need

  • 1/4-inch nut driver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Towels to catch any water
  • Replacement water inlet valve (Part WP2315576)
  • Work gloves
  • Safety gear as needed

Safety Precautions

Before starting the repair, take these steps to protect yourself and your appliance:

  1. Disconnect power by unplugging the refrigerator or switching off its circuit breaker to avoid an electric shock.
  2. Turn off the water supply at the wall. Keep towels nearby to catch any remaining water in the system.
  3. Wait for the appliance to cool if it was recently in use.
  4. Keep the workspace well lit, free of clutter, and clear of children and pets.
  5. Wear gloves to protect against sharp edges and debris.
  6. Work with dry hands.
  7. Handle parts carefully to avoid breakage or injury.
  8. Avoid touching exposed wires. If wiring must be handled, use insulated tools or gloves.
  9. Take photos or notes of wiring connections before disconnecting anything to make reassembly easier.
  10. Review the refrigerator’s user manual for any model-specific tips or warnings.
