How to Test and Replace the Drain Pump on a Washer

Testing the Main Control Board

  3. Slide the top panel back, lift it off, and set it aside.
  4. Locate the main control board and squeeze the tabs to rotate its top cover upward.
  5. Plug the washer back in.
  6. Set your multimeter to Volts AC (look for a “V” with a squiggly line).
  7. Test the two black wires at connection DP2 while the washer is set to drain and spin.
  8. Confirm 120 Volts AC within a minute after the door locks.
  9. If voltage is present, cancel the cycle and proceed.

Testing the Drain Pump

  1. Unplug the washer again.
  2. Disconnect the wires from connection DP2.
  3. Set your multimeter to measure resistance (Ohms, symbolized by an upside-down horseshoe).
  4. Test the black wires at the DP2 connection for resistance. Look for a reading around 16 Ohms.
  5. Replace the pump if the reading is significantly off.

Draining the Tub

  1. Use a drain hose and container to drain any water from the tub.

Accessing the Drain Pump

  1. Remove the detergent drawer.
  2. Use a T25 Torx driver to remove screws behind the detergent drawer.
  3. Remove screws at the top corners of the user interface panel using a 1/4-inch nut driver.
  4. Lift the locking tabs on the panel with a flathead screwdriver, disconnect the wires, and set the panel aside.
  5. Open the washer door and remove the door boot spring with a flathead screwdriver.
  6. Remove the T25 screws holding the door lock.
  7. Remove screws at the bottom of the front panel using a 1/4-inch nut driver.
  8. Lift off the front panel.

Inspecting and Cleaning the Drain Pump

  1. Drain any remaining water using the drain hose.
  2. Remove the coin catch filter and check for debris.

Replacing the Drain Pump

  1. Use channel lock pliers to remove the retaining ring holding the tub-to-pump hose.
  2. Disconnect the red grommet from the front of the drain pump housing.
  3. Pull the pump housing forward and lift it to remove the pump.
  4. Insert the new red grommet into the washer.
  5. Secure the pump housing to the rear grommets in the base.
  6. Attach the front of the pump housing with the red grommet.

Reassembling the Washer

  1. Use channel lock pliers to secure the tub-to-pump hose and drain hose with retaining rings.
  2. Position the front panel on the mounting hooks at the top of the washer frame.
  3. Secure the front panel with 1/4-inch screws at the bottom.
  4. Reattach the door lock using T25 screws.
  5. Press the door gasket onto the front panel lip and reinstall the door seal ring.
  6. Reconnect the interface wire to the user interface control panel.
  7. Lock the panel in place and secure it with screws.
  8. Slide the top panel back into position behind the user panel.
  9. Reattach the top panel with 1/4-inch screws at the back.
  10. Reinsert the detergent drawer.
  11. Plug the washer back in or turn the breaker back on.
