The dual infinite switch on a Samsung range controls the heat levels of the dual element, allowing you to adjust the cooking temperature as needed. When this switch stops working correctly, the dual element may not heat properly.

If you are experiencing problems with the dual infinite switch, you can test it and replace it by following a few simple steps.

Signs the Dual Infinite Switch Might Be Faulty

Before you begin testing, look for common signs that suggest the switch could be the problem:

  • The burner does not heat up at all
  • The burner only works on the highest setting and not at lower temperatures
  • The burner heats inconsistently, going from cold to very hot without adjustment
  • The element stays on even after the control knob is turned off
  • A burning smell or visible damage around the switch or control panel

What You Will Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Multimeter
  • Replacement dual infinite switch (make sure it matches your specific range model before purchasing)

Safety Tips

Before beginning any maintenance work, keep these important safety practices in mind:

  • Disconnect power: Always unplug the range or turn off the circuit breaker before starting. This eliminates the risk of electric shock.
  • Allow time to cool: If the appliance was recently used, allow it to cool completely before working on it.
  • Work carefully: Taking your time helps prevent mistakes and injuries.
  • Good lighting: A well-lit area makes it easier to see parts clearly.
  • Organized workspace: Keep the area free of clutter. Keep children and pets away from where you are working.
  • Stay dry: Make sure your hands and the workspace are dry before handling appliance parts.
  • Review the manual: Check the user manual for any specific instructions related to repairs or parts replacement.
  • Handle parts gently: Forcing parts may cause damage or injury.
  • Wear protective gloves: Insulated gloves can protect your hands from sharp edges and debris.
  • Be cautious with wiring: Avoid touching exposed wires or terminals. Use a non-conductive tool or wear insulating gloves if contact is necessary.
  • Take notes or photos: Record how wires are connected before disconnecting anything. This will make reassembly much easier.

How to Test and Replace a Dual Infinite Switch on a Samsung Electric Range

Follow these steps to test the dual infinite switch for faults and replace it if necessary.

Testing the Dual Infinite Switch

LIVE VOLTAGE WARNING: These tests require the range to be plugged in and powered on. Work carefully to avoid an electric shock. If you are not comfortable using a multimeter with live voltage, do not proceed.

  1. Unplug the range from the power outlet.
  2. Remove the screws on the rear panel behind the control panel.
  3. Lift off the rear panel to access the infinite switch terminals.
  4. Plug the range back into the outlet.
  5. Set the multimeter to Volts AC mode.
  6. Place one multimeter lead on the P1 terminal (double red wire) and the other lead on the P2 terminal (double black wire).
  7. Read the multimeter display. It should show 240 VAC.
  8. Confirm the range is plugged in.
  9. Turn the infinite switch to activate the inner element only.
  10. Set the multimeter to Volts AC mode if it is not already set.
  11. Place one meter lead on Terminal 4 (yellow and violet with gray wire) and the other lead on Terminal 2 (blue wire).
  12. Read the multimeter display. It should show 240 VAC.
  13. Confirm the range is plugged in.
  14. Turn the infinite switch to activate both the inner and outer burners.
  15. Set the multimeter to Volts AC mode.
  16. Place one meter lead on Terminal 4a (violet wire) and the other lead on Terminal 2 (blue wire).
  17. Read the multimeter display. It should show 240 VAC.
  18. If proper voltage is present at all test points, the infinite switch is functioning correctly.
  19. If voltage is missing at any test point, the dual infinite switch is faulty and needs to be replaced.

Replacing the Dual Infinite Switch

  1. Unplug the range from the power outlet or turn off the circuit breaker.
  2. Remove the screws securing the rear panel behind the control panel.
  3. Lift off the rear panel.
  4. Disconnect all wiring from the faulty dual infinite switch.
  5. Pull the control knob off the front of the switch.
  6. Remove the two screws holding the switch in place.
  7. Position the new dual infinite switch where the old one was installed.
  8. Secure it with the two screws.
  9. Reattach the control knob to the new switch.
  10. Connect the wiring to the corresponding terminals on the new switch.
  11. Reinstall the rear panel and secure it with the screws.
  12. Plug the range back into the power outlet or turn the circuit breaker back on.
  13. Test the range by turning on the burners to confirm the new switch works properly.
