Is your Samsung range’s left front dual element not working properly? This versatile burner is designed to offer precise heat control by letting you switch between a smaller inner ring and a larger outer ring depending on your cookware. If it’s not functioning, it might be time for a replacement.

Good news: you can test and replace the element yourself, without needing to call in a professional. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get the job done safely and efficiently.

Common Issues with Dual Elements

Before testing or replacing your dual element, it’s helpful to understand some common problems that can occur:

  • Element not heating: If the dual element is not heating at all, it could be due to a faulty connection, broken coil, or worn-out element.
  • Uneven heating: An element that heats unevenly may have a loose connection or may need cleaning to improve heat distribution.
  • Burner not switching between rings: If the element doesn’t switch between the inner and outer rings, it could be an issue with the selector switch or the wiring.
  • Element remains hot after turning off: If the element stays hot long after turning off the stove, the control board or thermostat may be malfunctioning.
  • Visible damage or cracking: Inspect the element for cracks, chips, or other visible damage that may require replacement.

What You’ll Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Multimeter
  • Replacement dual element (make sure it’s compatible with your specific model)

Safety First

Before diving in, take the proper safety measures to protect yourself and your appliance:

  • Disconnect the power: Unplug the range or switch off the circuit breaker to eliminate the risk of electric shock.
  • Wait for it to cool: If the appliance was recently used, let it cool down completely before starting any work.
  • Work slowly and carefully: Precision matters. Avoid rushing to reduce the risk of injury or damage.
  • Work in good lighting: Make sure your workspace is well-lit so you can clearly see what you’re doing.
  • Keep the area clear: Remove any clutter from your work area and keep kids and pets away during the process.
  • Stay dry: Never work with wet hands or in damp conditions.
  • Review your user manual: Look for model-specific safety notes or installation instructions.
  • Handle with care: Use gentle pressure when removing or handling components to avoid breakage or injury.
  • Use protective gloves: Insulated gloves can help shield your hands from sharp edges and debris.
  • Avoid exposed wires: Don’t touch any bare wires or terminals. Use insulated tools or gloves if needed.
  • Document everything: Before disconnecting any wires or components, take photos or jot down notes to simplify reassembly.

How to Test and Replace the Left Front Dual Element on a Samsung Electric Range

Follow these steps to check if the left front dual element is faulty and replace it if necessary.

Testing the Left Front Dual Element

  1. Unplug the range or turn off the power at the circuit breaker.
  2. Open the oven door.
  3. Remove the screws at the top of the oven opening that secure the cooktop.
  4. Lift and flip over the main glass top to expose the burner elements.
  5. Set your multimeter to continuity mode.
  6. Touch one meter probe to connector 1b (black wire) and the other to connector 2b (yellow wire).
  7. Confirm there is no continuity when the element is off and continuity appears after the element has been heating.
  8. For a resistance test, make sure the range is unplugged.
  9. Set your multimeter to Ohms mode.
  10. Touch one meter lead to terminal 2a (gray wire) and the other to terminal A (blue wire).
  11. Confirm that the resistance reading is between 45 and 55 Ohms.
  12. Move one lead to terminal B (orange wire) and confirm the resistance reading is between 42 and 48 Ohms.
  13. For a voltage test, plug the range back in or turn the breaker on.
  14. Set your multimeter to VAC mode.
  15. Touch one lead to terminal 2a (gray wire) and the other to terminal A (blue wire).
  16. Confirm the voltage reading is 240 volts AC.
  17. Move one lead to terminal B (orange wire) and confirm the voltage is also 240 volts AC.
  18. If voltage and resistance readings are correct but the element still does not work, the element is faulty and must be replaced.

Replacing the Left Front Dual Element

  1. Unplug the range or turn off the circuit breaker.
  2. Disconnect the wiring from the dual element.
  3. Remove the two screws at the top back corners of the range that hold the element bracket in place.
  4. Use a flathead screwdriver to pop the clip and release the element bracket.
  5. Remove the faulty dual element from the range.
  6. Place the new dual element onto the cooktop.
  7. Reconnect the wiring to the new element.
  8. Reinstall the bracket and secure it using the two screws.
  9. Flip the glass cooktop back into position.
  10. Reinstall the screws underneath the front edge of the cooktop.
  11. Reinstall the rear panel if it was removed.
  12. Plug the range back in or turn the circuit breaker back on.
